The 3D4YOU concept aims at establishing a practical and efficient 3DTV system that is independent of display technology, and backward compatible with 2D broadcasting and conventional stereo. Read more about how 3D4YOU wants to reach a practicable content creation process for a 3DTV production, including the delivery chain and considering Human factors.

The 3D4YOU project will develop the key elements of a practical 3D television system, particularly, the definition of a 3D delivery format and guidelines for a 3D content creation process. The project will develop 3D capture techniques, convert captured content for broadcasting and develop 3D coding for delivery via broadcast, i.e. suitable to transmit and make public. 3D broadcasting is seen as the next major step in home entertainment. The cinema and computer games industries have already shown that there is considerable public demand for 3D content, but special glasses are needed which limits their appeal. 3D4YOU will address the consumer market which coexists with digital cinema and computer games. The 3D4YOU project aims to pave the way for the introduction a 3D TV system. The project will build on previous European research on 3D, such as the FP5 project ATTEST, which has enabled European organisations to become world leaders in this field. 3D4YOU will maintain the momentum built up and to capitalise on the wealth of experience of the participants in this project. Combining strenghts from different European countries, the 3D4YOU consortium covers all important aspects of the 3D broadcast chain. Bringing these expertises together, its objective is to deliver an end-to-end system for 3D high quality media.

The public deliverables D1.1.2 “3D Content Requirements & Initial Acquisition Work” and D2.1.2 “Requirements on post-production and format conversion”, available from this website, provide an excellent overview of the related work that has been carried out in the first year of the project. In the project’s second year the partners have intensified their studies in the field of 3D TV. Novel 3D capture techniques were implemented and their suitability for the later processing and conversion were investigated. Also experiments in coding and transmission, as well as tests that explore the subjective importance of different modalities of 3D TV have been performed. Outstanding achievements within the project are documented in the results section. There, also the “Beer Garden” 3D test sequence is available, which is one of the 3D sequences that have been produced within the 3D4YOU project. This sequence has also been submitted to MPEG in response to its call for 3D content. Also accessible on the website is the vast list of presentations and publications.

The knowledge generated and the technology developed within 3D4YOU will have sustainable effects on the European community. On one hand it will strengthen the existing expertise in programme making and will make sure that the media industry gains technical advances to competewith the world-wide competition. On the other hand it will give the European industry advanced knowledge to develop new products for the emerging market of 3D TV systems that will help to create and secure jobs.
